The Conservation System includes 190 Wilderness Areas with 7.6 million acres in 10 Western States. These areas, meant to be essentially undisturbed and natural, have been designated by Congress under the National Wilderness Preservation System, which was created in 1964. Wilderness is an important part of the Conservation System, providing protection of natural landscapes, wildlife habitat, clean water, and scientific research. Wilderness is an important, and growing, source of recreation for our increasingly urbanized West.
