The Bureau of Land Management's monuments are - compared to those managed by the Park Service, Forest Service, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service - new. The first was designated in 1996.
More than 100 monuments have been created by Congress or the President since the passage of the Antiquities Act of 1906, which provides the President authority to create national monuments to protect "objects of historic or scientific interest." Each monument has its own designated purpose, generally to protect natural or historic features. BLM's 15 national monuments are listed below.
