The Wilderness Society

No other country on earth has the kind of public land system that America has fostered. Our national lands --parks, forests, refuges and BLM lands -- are an incomparable resource that provide clean air and pure water, wildlife habitat, and solitude. We treasure them as beautiful, wild places to hunt, fish, hike and spend time with our families. Our public lands are also a potential source of minerals, timber, oil and gas, and are used for livestock grazing.

The demands for these lands and the pressure to development them increase each day, as natural resources become all the more precious. Industries mount well-funded lobbying and public relations campaigns to gain unfettered access to them.

Who Speaks for the Land?

We do. We speak for the wilderness, and the animals and plants that depend on wilderness for survival. We speak for the clean water and clean air that undisturbed lands provide for all of us. We work for their protection, and we win.

Since the passage of the Wilderness Act, The Wilderness Society has helped gain permanent protection for more than 105 million acres of wild places.
